Before becoming part of the Miforan Empire, Dukarit and Jharuz were two countries with a long history of conflict dating back to before the Collapse. The original cause has been lost to the mists of time, but something set off a neighborly hatred that has lasted more than a millennium. Ever since, both sides have tried to conquer the other or one-up each other in all possible ways.

When Dukarit, Jharuz, Ogren, and other countries joined the Miforan Empire during Empress Acilia's reign, they were all brought together as one province. A grandiose decision was then made that a new capital should be built. In Balturan times, an island was created when the Fiucor and Corre rivers met and a gardyl was built there. Abandoned since the Collapse, this place was chosen to create the new capital: Nafikal.

During the time of empire, both former countries had to cease their hostilities, though they still begrudged each other everything. When the empire fell, both nations went back to their previous borders, and attacks resumed immediately. However, the Corre river proved to be a very good border, with either side being unable to create a foothold and defend it for any real amount of time before being driven back into the river.

The one exception was Nafikal, considered to be the jewel of the west. Both countries coveted it to be their capital and when the empire fell, both nations had many citizens residing there. Not wanting to damage the spectacular city in all-out combat, an accord was drawn up where both sides agreed to it being a neutral zone until one side or the other could claim a decisive victory.

After centuries of combat between both nations with little to show for it, violence returned to Nafikal. It started with attacks between squads of soldiers, which quickly escalated before both governments could put a stop to it. Neither side wanted to remove their forces from the city and small-scale attacks kept happening. At this point, the nations of Dolac, Haza, and Otteun brought in their troops to enforce a ceasefire and protect their many interests in the city. This has stopped any combat from breaking out, but every so often attacks are carried out against buildings or people. Both governments deny they are behind these.
