The Prince-Bishopric of Ogren is a small ecclesiastical principality to the west of the Sarodin Sea. It is mostly know for the vast libraries containing written works on the history of all regions that are friendly to Ogren and it’s historians.

Geography

Ogren is mostly comprised of hills, wedged between two rivers that form the northern, western and southern border. On the western border some larger plains are located, which produce the very famous (and expensive) alcoholic drinks Ogren has as it’s second largest export. Most of the lands are covered in dense forests with narrow roads winding up the hills and down through the valleys.

Economy

The largest export of Ogren is information. Many scholars, rulers and people otherwise employed contribute greatly to the coffers of the prince-bishop for access to the vast sums of knowledge stored in the great libraries in the capital city. The information stored here can naturally also be purchased for ones own collection. The books produced by the scholars in the Palace of Knowledge are highly valuable.

The second largest export is comprised of the large variety of alcoholic beverages, ranging from high quality beers brewed in the monasteries which can be found on the highest hills and deepest valleys furthest from civilization, to the fruit and honey enriched wines brewed with the grapes that grow against stone walls in the river valleys.

Culture

As a Prince-Bishopric the culture of Ogren is heavily rooted in faith. The state religion is the worship of Boccob. The principality is mostly pacifist, with no standing army or levies to be called upon in times of war. For security the Prince-Bishop relies mostly on the difficulty of conquering the lands because of it’s geography, and the fact the lands do not provide much value in raw materials or strategic location.

Major factions

Monastic faction

On paper the most important faction, the monastic faction is comprised of the monks and rulings groups of the Bishopric. The monastic faction considers the gathering and preservation of knowledge of all types their most important task. By storing what is known they hope to preserver the balance in the universe and assist scholars with their research into magic.

Militaristic faction

Though most people of Ogren are pacifist there are some that advocate for a stronger military potential, officially for defence though the trebuchet that was tested by the city watch of Les Davroux did not seem to have much potential for defence. Most of those advocating for a larger military seem to be connected to the city watch and arms industry, either directly or indirectly.

Bureaucratic faction

While the monastic faction appears to have all the power, this is not the case. The enormous bureaucratic apparatus of Ogren spreads across all lands that historians visit. They are the ones that determine what information is disclosed to whom and what is recorded in the Libraries of Ogren; the Great Library, the Lesser Libraries and the Closed Library. Within the bureaucratic faction three large families have most power, the family Godfroy hailing from Boullion, the family de la Tour d’Auvergne of Auvergne and the family Pierrepont hailing from the southern border regions.
