A fun way to go down a mountain, provided you aren't being chased by an avalanche.

It works like this; you decide on your route along the boxes and add up all modifiers. Then you make a check and add the modifiers to try and beat the DC. You will always arrive in the selected box but in what state is dependent on the result.

Every turn you make a Toboggan check (Dex + Vehicle, land skill - 1) with a number of modifiers as explained below.

At the start of your turn, you can decide to change your speed. You can increase or decrease your speed by 1 without modifier. You can decrease your speed by more than one but gain a negative modifier of (speed decrease) squared.

You move a number of boxes equal to your speed and gain a modifier as shown in the table below (should speeds go beyond 5; the modifier doubles every time). You can move to a box ahead or to one to the left or right if its front edge is further than that of your current box. You can’t move both left and right on the same turn. For every move that isn’t ahead you take a -2 modifier on your check.

Some boxes are more difficult terrain; off-white boxes add a -2 modifier and orange boxes a -4 modifier for each you travel through. The grey lined boxes are ramps which makes you fly over the next box and adds 2 to your speed the moment you clear it but also gives a -6 landing modifier.

You decide your route through the boxes and then add all modifiers to the check. The DC for the check is 10 (this is a suggestion, adapt based on difficulty and skill).

Failing the check by 4 or less does one structure damage to your toboggan. Failing with more than 4 will have graver consequences. A typical toboggan might have 4 structure points and failing by more than 4 might do more direct damage and/or impose extra modifiers.

Boulders: hitting one is not recommended as it could well wreck your toboggan (not to mention your body) and reduce your speed to zero.

Trees: it’s not impossible to miss the tree trunk and just barrel through the branches, it’s not easy either. Trying this adds a -6 modifier to your check this turn and a -3 next turn as you are busy getting the needles from your face. Should you fail the check, see boulder.
