An organisation named for the hero Elric who helped to imprison the escaped Primordials. The Companions help people in need whenever they are needed most. They can be found almost anywhere across the world.
Samengevat
In deze wereld bestaat een organisatie die ontstaan is als instelling om het voor de armen op te nemen. 'The Companions of Elric', waar de legendarische Elric de oprichter van is. De organisatie bestaat al heel lang, maar is door de jaren/eeuwen/millennia steeds afhankelijker geworden van de overheid en van de merchants, die de organisatie grotendeels financieren. De organisatie helpt nu vaak eerst de plaatsen waar een belang van een financierder ligt.
Iets meer in detail
De Companions geloven dus niet in een godsdienst, maar in een bepaalde levensstijl: mensen in nood bijstaan, meestal door voedsel te brengen in tijden van hongersnood. De organisatie heeft hoofdkwartieren gevestigd in enkele van de grotere steden van Korint. De organisatie heeft veel leden, soms sluiten mensen die ze gered hebben zich bij hen aan en verder hebben veel leden zich aangesloten om zich voor zo’n nobel doel in te zetten.
Meestal is er geen geweld nodig bij het helpen van de mensen in nood en hoeft er alleen maar voedsel afgeleverd te worden, maar de aanhangers zijn ook in vechtkunsten getraind voor noodgevallen en zelfverdediging. Een lid blijft zijn leven lang bij de organisatie. De organisatie wordt gefinancierd door de plaatselijke overheid, door de giften die de vroegere hulpbehoevenden de organisatie geven en in het heden ook voor een groot deel door merchant guilds en andere vermogenden. Door de financiering van de merchants heeft de organisatie voor het eerst in zijn bestaan geld over.
Over het algemeen zijn de leden van de organisatie geliefd, maar toch worden ze door gewetenloze misdadigers wel eens aangevallen omdat ze wel eens waardevolle spullen meedragen, bijvoorbeeld voedsel naar een dorp of giften terug naar het hoofdkwartier.
Kleding
De Companions kleden zich in wit linnen. Dit was vroeger, ten tijde dat men vermoed dat Elric leefde, het traditionele kledingstuk in Korint. Hoge rangen bij de Companions beschikken over eenvoudige mantels met verschillende kleuren, een paarse mantel is gereserveerd voor de leider van de Companions.
Elric
Elric is een legendarisch personage waaraan de Companions of Elric hun naam danken. Over Elric bestaan vele verhalen: er staat geschreven dat Elric een boer in het zuiden van Korint was. Nadat hij gehoord had dat de oogst in het noorden mislukt was, zou hij met zijn gehele oogst van dat jaar het land door gereisd zijn om zijn voedsel met de mensen daar te delen. Elric stierf toen zelf van de honger. Degenen van het dorp in het Noorden die het overleefden, werden de eerste Companions of Elric.Een ander verhaal zegt dat Elric, toen zijn dorp aangevallen werd door bandieten, op de bandieten afstormde en ze te lijf ging met niets dan zijn vuisten. Hij wist zo de bandieten af te schrikken, en ze vluchten. Elric bezweek vervolgens aan zijn verwondingen en zijn dorpsgenoten werden vervolgens de eerste Companions of Elric.
Bijzonderheden
In de rangen van de Companions wordt geen magie geaccepteerd. Als reden wordt hiervoor gegeven dat Elric zich ook zonder magie moest redden, en dat het traditie binnen de Companions is om geen magie binnen de organisatie te hebben. Door het land verspreid staan vele kastelen die lang geleden aan de Companions toebehoorden.
